Introduction to Film Language: Homework

 "Blade runner"
I think the film is about a scientist who has created a humanoid or an android of some sort which is now going rouge and it’s the scientist who takes it upon himself to stop them
I think the story would be a hybrid genre of action, thriller and sci-fi. I have decided that it is an action and thriller due to the fact that most of the film poster is black with a high contrast of orange gold and white. Going on to the point of why I believe that it is partially sci-fi is because of the colour silver and white which strongly reinforces the myth of spaceships and robots being covered in the colour of silver.
I would say that the target audience would be 75% male and 25% female. This is because the main image on the film poster is a man holding gun. The fact that, that the protagonist, what I presume the male to be, is holding a gun and not something else backs up the idea of the movie being preferably for males.

  "Scary Movie 2"
I think the story would be about a convict who is seeking revenge on a group of school kids. This is because there is a person wearing a typical prison uniform as well as a muzzle. I also believe this because he is the only person in the group that is happy about the situation they are in.
I think that the genre of this movie is comedy because at the top of the film poster it quotes a reaction of somebody saying it was “Absolutely Hilarious”.
I think the target audience is 55% male and 45% female 16 - 25. This is because the film poster contains darker colours, which are related to the male target audience. I have also made this decision because there are fours males and 3 females which also suggest the target audience and how some males may only find certain scenes funny.

 “Uzak”
I think that “UZAK” is about a lonely man going into a foreign country trying to make a living, a new living or potentially trying to get away from his past. This is because the main character is standing in snow outside a city or town by himself. However I have two assumptions on what this film could be about. My second assumption is that this man has run away because he was accused of a crime which he did not commit and now is trying to the find the real perpetrator. This is because there is man standing by himself looking over what seems to be a corrupt city going into anguish.
I think this movie would go into the hybrid genre of action thriller or it would go into a different category of drama in itself. This is because the city in the background looks like it’s being suppressed in a sense and that it is going to get worse for the better.
I think that the target audience is 60% male and 40% female 16 – 28  because of the dull colour scheme that stands out through the film poster. I also think this because of the text “UZAK” is written in a big bold sharpened way this text was also used in many propaganda throughout world war two.

 “Im not scared”
I think that this film is about a young boy who has found something out of the ordinary or interesting which is scary however he does not want to admit so he keeps going back until he doesn’t become scared. I think this due to the fact that there is a boy with a confused look on his face while looking into ditch or hole, I also decided on this because the words I’m not scared are often repeated as a way to mentally tell yourself that it Is nothing to worry about and that it can be dealt with in a suitable manner.
I think this films genre is a hybrid of adventure and thriller. This is a thriller due to the fact that it says it at the bottom of the film poster. Whereas, I think it’s an adventure because of the bright colour scheme and the contrast of white yellow and brownish yellow in the title suggest that the main character will have to do things they are not proud of to get what they want.
I think that the target audience is 75% female and 25% male 15 – 23. This is because males wouldn’t feel like that they would relate to the film which reinforces the fact that males wish to be seen as macho men, as in never scared of anything, however some of males may feel that they can relate to the situation the boy is in which is why I had chosen 25% for male. I chose 75% female because the female will feel pity for the child as if it was their own which call a mothers instincts. I chose 15 – 23 because i felt the younger generation will  be more likely to relate to the situation the young boy is in.

“Sin City”

I think that this film is about a man who has set out to rid the city of a crime organisation or a gang. This is because there are five people standing and in the middle of them the protagonist, or what seems to be the protagonist, is looking directly into the camera which suggest that he’s hunting a certain person. I also came to this because of the way there is a man wearing a cloak or trench coat under the letter S in “SIN CITY”.
I think that this movie’s genre is action. This is because the film poster is mostly black and grey apart from the red Sin City part, these colours represent sadness and sorrow which will then result in revenge. I also believe that this is an action genre because of the guns that the “protagonist” and his accomplices are holding this suggest that there will be a gun fight of some sort.
I think that the target audience is 80% male and 20% female 16 – 27. This is because There would be explicit scenes in this film thus resulting in why I said 16 also I picked the age to be 27 because the older generation wouldn’t find dark screens and dark colours good anyways. Also I picked 80% male because the colour black and red are related and associated to males more than females.

“Pirates of the Caribbean Dead man’s chest”

I think this film is about the three people seen at the top of the film poster sailing the sea’s in search for a dead man’s chest. I think this because of the ship seen in the middle of the film poster, I also think this because part of the title says “dead man’s chest” which gave it away.
I think the genre of this film is a hybrid of Action and Adventure. This is because the character on the left has a gun in his hand which creates a sense that he is wanted by somebody. Also the fact that the title has a skull in the middle suggest that there could be the death of one of the people at the top. There’s also the reason that it is an adventure because the ship is on a void in the sea.
I think the target audience is 12 – 15 of age, I think that the gender would be 50 – 50 because the colour of the film poster is green which has natural sense to it making it more neutral then siding to one gender.

“Bride and Prejudice”
I think that this film is about two people who to get married however their family members won’t let them due to ethnic background. I think this because the word prejudice means hostile opinions towards race religion or national group, this makes me think that both families don’t agree with their children marrying someone of the other race.
I think the genre of the film would be romance because the one of the features of the film poster are quotes and it says “spectacular romantic” which suggest that the film is a romance, as well as the fact that the title says “BRIDE”. This is also a play on words as the usual quote is "Pride and Prejudice"
I think the target audience for this film is 75% female 25% male age 20 – 30. This is the two main characters in the middle of the film poster are grown adults so teenagers wouldn't relate too what is happening.  I also picked 90% female because of the bright colours that are shown in the film poster don’t relate to the myth of males not feeling emotion or being less able to show their emoion.

“Million Dollar Baby”

I think this film is about an underdog girl who wants to be a boxer so she goes to the best boxing coach in her local area to hen be signed to the big leagues. I think this because the main female character is wearing the female boxing outfit/attire. As well as this the man female character is looking up towards the main white male in the top left corner which suggest that she’s his disciple or he’s her role model. As well as this I also believe that the film could all be an internal struggle of revenge or or doing the right thing. I believe this because of the way the main female character has her back towards the black male character and has an intense glare against the white male character.
I think that this film is a hybrid genre of drama and action due to the fact that the strong contrast of black and white represents an internal struggle of the character’s morals.
I would say that this film target audience would be 16 – 26 55% female 45% male. I would say this because if it does go with the storyline I predicted than it would help inspire the female community into acting for themselves and not waiting for things to come to them.

Film Language: Mise-en-scene

The Dark Knight: Movie Still

Instantly from the mise-en-scene we can tell that the character shown is the antagonist. This is shown in the way that the character has a smile on his face whilst in a cell with armed guards outside the cell. The calm yet humorous facial expression suggests that the antagonist is enjoying being put in a cell and that there is a reason why he is in a cell which the other characters seem to not know.
The dark colour scheme compared to the antagonist bright colours suggest that he is an anomaly in the scene or that he doesn't fit in. The direct eye contact with the camera from the antagonist suggests that he is plotting something or saying to the audience "Watch what happens next", this is reinforced by how he looks like he is smiling and cheerful with the situation he is in. On the other hand, the direct line of appeal with the fact that his mouth has been cut to make him look like he is smiling could be used to make the audience feel sympathy for him. The fact that the antagonist make up suggests that he is a clown challenges the myth of clowns being entertainers and cheerful. In addition the fact that the antagonist has his hands together underneath the middle cell bar suggests that the antagonist has been in a situation like this before and that it doesn't make him feel fear of the sort.
